Child and family Therapy

Pono Roots Counseling Center offers a variety of parent support services and counseling options. We understand the stress and concern that exists around parenting today. We know that school, social media, family life, and in some cases, adoption or foster care, can lead to parenting challenges for which you might not always feel totally equipped.

Our team of compassionate providers is experienced in working with all kinds of families and all kinds of children. We get neuro-atypical, we understand normal, we welcome struggling; essentially we love working with families and children and will always seek to find ways to shed light and provide helpful tools. We know that a happy childhood is key to an easier life later.

Here are a few of the options we offer:

Assessments

We offer comprehensive mental status examinations and mental health assessments. We understand that every child is different and we believe in individualized treatment plans to fully capture all of the unique needs of each child. We like to make our assessments enjoyable for the child by incorporating art and games into the process!

Child Therapy

Unlike adults, children aren’t able to sit down and verbally communicate what they’re having trouble with. Instead, they express themselves through play. Play therapy is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that is highly successful with children between the ages of 3 and 12. Play therapy can help children of any gender or race, and can be individually tailored to suit the child’s needs.

Parent- Child Interaction Therapy

We understand that when children act out, it can impact the whole family and leave parents feeling frustrated, hurt, and confused. We offer Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, a 15- 20-session intervention that is proven to decrease oppositional behavior (good-bye temper tantrums!) and strengthen the parent child relationship (hello family cohesion!). This type of therapy can be tailored to include multiple children and in some cases, the entire family system.
