After decades spent guiding waiting children into loving homes, the board and staff at Hawaii International Child (HIC) had seen a lot; a lot of happiness, a lot of trauma, a lot of chaos and a lot of calm. After decades of helping create families, we came to see the need for sustaining, maintaining and supporting our wonderful families. With an awareness of the challenges in intercountry adoption (ICA), and a renewed commitment to helping local birth mothers, children and families, in 2020, HIC used the pandemic pause to pivot, rebrand and recommit to serving our community. In late 2020, A Family Tree Adoption Agency (AFT) blossomed out of HIC, and Pono Roots Counseling Center grew as a branch of AFT.
Pono Roots Counseling Center is located in the AFT office building on South King Street in central Honolulu. Services are offered seven (7) days a week, from 8 AM to 8 PM (sometimes even earlier or later, depending on client need). We are a counseling center for anyone wishing to address and sort through issues related to parenting, childhood, relationships, adoption, family-of-origin issues, trauma, adjustment, PTSD, anxiety, or general issues related to being human.
Starting in January 2022, we offer parent/child and tween groups. We also have classes for fine motor and sensory coordination, offered in our unique fiber arts room.
